Reports the largest hydraulic-gradient magnitude [{dh/dx, dh/dy}] found at the midpoint of any boundary segment selected by pred[x,y].

This is the standard piping/heave check on a downstream ground surface or a dam toe: compare the result against a critical gradient of about 1 for typical soils.
