Limit equilibrium slope stability with layered ground, pore water pressure, seepage, surface loads and tension cracks
Contributed by: Malcolm Woodruff
TerraLapsus analyses the stability of soil slopes by limit equilibrium. One model definition - layered ground, water table or a computed pore pressure field, surface loads and an optional tension crack - is shared by five methods: Bishop simplified, Janbu simplified, Morgenstern-Price, Spencer and Sarma. Circular critical-surface searches run in parallel; non-circular surfaces are found by local optimisation or a global cuckoo search, including slides along weak layers. Pore pressures can be computed by finite-element seepage with TerraPercolatio (installed automatically as a dependency) and fed straight back into the model. A criticality map shows every trial surface below a chosen factor of safety, and the line of thrust checks Spencer and Morgenstern-Price results for admissibility.

Describe the ground once. A 10 m high 1:2 slope in a single clay, with a permeability so the same model can drive the seepage calculation:
| In[1]:= | ![]() |
| Out[1]= | ![]() |
Search for the critical circle by Bishop's simplified method. Strengths are factored by the default strength factor 0.8, as the legend says:
| In[2]:= |
| Out[2]= |
| In[3]:= |
| Out[3]= | ![]() |
Compute the pore pressures with TerraPercolatio instead of drawing a water table by hand. Water stands at 16 m behind the crest and at ground level at the toe:
| In[4]:= |
| Out[4]= | ![]() |
Feed the computed field back into the model and search again:
| In[5]:= | ![]() |
| Out[5]= |
| In[6]:= |
| Out[6]= | ![]() |
