Details and Options

Images that are retrieved are large (4K) and scaled down by default
Video generation requires the retrieval of multiple large images via an internet connection so care should be take to limit the number of requested dates since query time and memory use can become significant.
If a list of dates isn't specified, then the results are for the past week with "Day" granularity.
HMI is the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).
Solar images come from a variety of NASA/ESA instruments in different wavelengths.
SolarVideo takes the same options as SlideShowVideo with the following additions and changes:
"BlendColors"Automaticcolors to blend together to colorize the resulting image
"Colorize"Truewhether to colorize the original black and white images
ImageSizeMediumimage size of the resulting image
"BlendColors" must either be Automatic, a list of colors, or a gradient known to ColorData.
Data availability varies depending on the instrument.
The instrument code, instcode, can be any of the following integer values corresponding to known instruments (date range estimates are given where available):

Examples

Basic Examples (2)

Generate a video of the Sun from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) over a specified range of dates:

In[1]:=
dr = {DateObject[{2024, 8, 21, 10, 30, 0}, TimeZone -> "America/Chicago"], DateObject[{2024, 8, 23, 10, 30, 0}, TimeZone -> "America/Chicago"], Quantity[6, "Hours"]};
In[2]:=
ResourceFunction[
 "SolarVideo", ResourceSystemBase -> "https://www.wolframcloud.com/obj/resourcesystem/api/1.0"][dr]
Out[2]=

Generate a video of the Sun from the SDO AIA 131 instrument over a range of dates:

In[3]:=
ResourceFunction[
 "SolarVideo", ResourceSystemBase -> "https://www.wolframcloud.com/obj/resourcesystem/api/1.0"][dr, 9]
Out[3]=

Get an association of instrument codes and their descriptions:

In[4]:=
ResourceFunction[
 "SolarVideo", ResourceSystemBase -> "https://www.wolframcloud.com/obj/resourcesystem/api/1.0"]["InstrumentAssociation"]
Out[4]=

Options (2)

Colorize (1)

"Colorize" can be used to turn off the artificial coloring applied by default:

In[5]:=
dr = {DateObject[{2024, 8, 21, 10, 30, 0}, TimeZone -> "America/Chicago"], DateObject[{2024, 8, 23, 10, 30, 0}, TimeZone -> "America/Chicago"], Quantity[6, "Hours"]};
In[6]:=
ResourceFunction[
 "SolarVideo", ResourceSystemBase -> "https://www.wolframcloud.com/obj/resourcesystem/api/1.0"][dr, 9, "Colorize" -> False]
Out[6]=

BlendColors (1)

"BlendColors" can be used to specify or override the default colors used by "Colorize":

In[7]:=
dr = {DateObject[{2024, 8, 21, 10, 30, 0}, TimeZone -> "America/Chicago"], DateObject[{2024, 8, 23, 10, 30, 0}, TimeZone -> "America/Chicago"], Quantity[6, "Hours"]};
In[8]:=
ResourceFunction[
 "SolarVideo", ResourceSystemBase -> "https://www.wolframcloud.com/obj/resourcesystem/api/1.0"][dr, 9, "BlendColors" -> {Black, Purple, Blue, Cyan, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Pink, White}]
Out[8]=
In[9]:=
ResourceFunction[
 "SolarVideo", ResourceSystemBase -> "https://www.wolframcloud.com/obj/resourcesystem/api/1.0"][dr, 9, "BlendColors" -> "AuroraColors"]
Out[9]=
