Seismic Moment Magnitude and Equivalent Energy

Seismic moment is a quantity used by seismologists to measure the size of an earthquake. It is directly proportional to the energy released.

The equivalent energy and seismic moment are proportional to 10 to the power of 3/2 of the seismic moment magnitude.

Formula

{QuantityVariable["E", "Energy"] == 10^(4.8 + 1.5*QuantityVariable[Subscript["M", "w"], "Unitless"])*Quantity[1, "Joules"], QuantityVariable[Subscript["M", "0"], "Energy"] == 10^(9.1 + 1.5*QuantityVariable[Subscript["M", "w"], "Unitless"])*Quantity[1, "Joules"]}
