Clean and Enhance a Scanned 3D Mesh

Simplify, re-mesh, smooth, repair and restore visual attributes on a scanned 3D mesh

Scanned 3D models often contain dense geometry, uneven triangles, surface noise and small defects that make them harder to render or process. This example starts from a scanned mesh and applies a compact cleanup pipeline: mesh-size inspection, simplification, re-meshing, smoothing, hole repair, and restoration of vertex colors and normals from the original model. The result is a lighter and cleaner mesh that preserves the visual appearance of the scan.

Start with an imported scanned mesh that preserves the object's geometry, vertex colors and surface normals:

Measure the number of vertices, edges and faces in the original mesh:

Simplify the mesh to reduce the number of cells while preserving the overall shape of the scanned object:

Remesh the simplified model to improve triangle quality and produce a more uniform surface for later processing:

Smooth the remeshed surface to reduce scan noise:

Repair hole edges in the processed mesh to close small surface gaps and improve mesh integrity:

Create a nearest-neighbor mapping from the original mesh coordinates to their vertex colors:

Create a nearest-neighbor mapping from the original mesh coordinates to their vertex normals:

Transfer the original colors and normals onto the cleaned mesh:
